VERSE 1 In evil long I took delight, Unawed by sin or fear, Till a new object struck my sight, And stopped my wild career. I saw One hanging on a tree In agony and blood, Who fixed His suffering eyes on me, As near his cross I stood. CHORUS Oh, the Lamb, bleeding Lamb The Lamb up on Calvary Oh, the Lamb who was slain His death broke the curse of the tree Now he lives again Lives again VERSE 2 Sure never till my dying breath Can I forget that look, It seemed to charge me with His death, Though not a word He spoke. My conscience felt and owned my guilt, And stopped me in despair, I saw my sins His blood had spilt, And helped to nail Him there. VERSE 3 A second look He gave, which said, “I freely all forgive, This blood is for your ransom paid, I died that you might live.” Thus, while His death fully displays The depths of all my shame, Such is the mystery of grace, The Cross replaced my blame! The Cross replaced my blame! Jesus Christ replaced my blame!

VERSE 1: Jesus, whose blood so freely streamed To satisfy the law’s demand; By Thee from guilt and wrath redeemed, Before the Father’s face I stand. VERSE 2: To reconcile offending man, Make Justice drop her angry rod; What creature could have formed the plan, Or who fulfill it but our God? CHORUS: Peace by what means so dearly bought? What rebel could have hoped to see? Peace by this injured Sovereign wrought, My Savior fastened to a tree. VERSE 3: No drop remains of all the curse, For wretches who deserved the whole; No arrows dipped in wrath will pierce The guilty, but returning soul. BRIDGE: Oh Lord prepare us, In war 'gainst sin, we need your peace. Oh Lord prepare us, When evil haunts we need your peace. Oh Lord prepare us, Oh give us Christ our only peace. VERSE 4: Though dead to sin, I live in need, Lies may assault, I may distress; But nothing can quench thy love for me, Nor rob me of the Prince of peace.

VERSE 1 I asked the Lord that I might grow In faith and love and ev’ry grace, Might more of His salvation know, And seek more earnestly His face. VERSE 2 ‘Twas He who taught me thus to pray, And He, I trust, has answered prayer, But it has been in such a way As almost drove me to despair. VERSE 3 I hoped that in some favored hour At once He’d answer my request And, by His love’s constraining pow’r, Subdue my sins and give me rest. VERSE 4 Instead of this, He made me feel The hidden evils of my heart And let the angry pow’rs of hell Assault my soul in ev’ry part. VERSE 5 Yea, more with His own hand He seemed Intent to aggravate my woe, Crossed all the fair designs I schemed, Humbled my heart and laid me low. VERSE 6 “Lord, why is this,” I trembling cried; “Wilt Thou pursue Thy worm to death?” “’Tis in this way,” the Lord replied, “I answer prayer for grace and faith.” VERSE 7 “These inward trials I employ From self and pride to set thee free And break thy schemes of earthly joy

VERSE 1: The Lord will happiness divine On contrite hearts bestow: Then tell me, gracious God, is mine A contrite heart or no? VERSE 2: I hear, but seem to hear in vain, Insensible as steel; If ought is felt, 'tis only pain To find I cannot feel. CHORUS: O make this heart rejoice or ache; Decide this doubt for me; And if it be not broken, break, And heal it with thy love for me. VERSE 3: I sometimes think myself inclined To love thee, if I could; But often feel another mind, Averse to all that's good. BRIDGE: I see thy saints with comfort filled, When in thy house of prayer; But still in bondage I am held, And find no comfort there.

VERSE 1 "I am," saith Christ, our glorious head (May we attention give), “The resurrection of the dead, The life of all that live. VERSE 2 "By faith in Me, the soul receives New life, though dead before; And he that in My name believes, Shall live, to die no more. CHORUS To Thee we look, to Thee we bow; To Thee for help we call; Our life and resurrection Thou, Our hope, our joy, our all, Our all. VERSE 3 "The sinner, sleeping in his grave, Shall at My voice awake; And when I once begin to save, My work I ne’er forsake." VERSE 4 Fulfill Thy promise, gracious Lord, On us assembled here; Put forth Thy spirit with the Word, And cause the dead to hear. Preserve the power of faith alive, In those who love Thy name; For sin and Satan daily strive To quench the sacred flame. VERSE 6 Thy power and mercy first prevailed, From death to set us free; And often since our life had failed If not renewed by Thee.

Perseverance 03:54
VERSE 1 Rejoice, believer, in the Lord, who makes your cause his own; the hope that's built upon his word shall ne'er be overthrown. Though many foes beset your road, and feeble is your arm, your life is hid with Christ in God beyond the reach of harm. VERSE 2 Weak as you are, you shall not faint or fainting shall not die! For Jesus, strength of ev'ry saint, will aid you from on high. Though unperceived by mortal sense, faith sees him always near! a guide, a glory, sure defense; then what have you to fear? TAG As surely as he overcame and triumphed once for you, so surely you that love his name shall in him triumph too.

VERSE 1 Now may He who from the dead Brought the Shepherd of the sheep, Jesus Christ, our King and Head, All our souls in safety keep! May He teach us to fulfill What is pleasing in His sight; Perfect us in His will, And preserve us day and night! VERSE 2 To that dear Redeemer's praise, Who the cov'nant sealed with blood, Let our hearts and voices raise Loud thanksgivings to our God. We trust all God’s ways are peace And his promises are sure He works through us in Christ In his Life we live secure. TAG Glory, All Glory Forever, To Him Glory, All Glory Forever, Amen

about

John Newton and William Cowper had a strange relationship. One, a former slave trader turned abolitionist pastor. The other, a clinically depressed master poet. Yet from 1760-1780, week after week, they followed Christ together by writing hymns for the little church in Olney, England. We've captured some of those hymns here, and contextualized them for use in congregational worship today. As you step into these scriptural songs, our prayer is that you would be guided through suffering and into living under the joyful shadow of the cross of Christ.
